“When Fake Chanel launches a brand new handbag, you can almost be sure it will be an instant classic,” wrote the world’s largest fashion magazine, Vogue, a few years ago. There is something to it, because the two most important models of Chanel handbags – the classic 2.55 and the innovative Boy – have been the biggest object of sighs of fashionistas from around the world for years. There are no accidental elements in any of them. The characteristic quilting and stripe, each pocket and even the color of the lining have their own stories in it. How did you come to that? The first “Chanel” was created in the 1920s,
when Coco Chanel drew attention to the fact that constantly holding a handbag in her hand was very uncomfortable and completely impractical. Interestingly,
when designing, she was inspired by the straps she saw on soldiers’ bags. The finished handbag was launched in 1929. In 1954, Mademoiselle Coco decided to update the look of the handbag. The new version was created in February 1955 and it is from this date that its name comes from – 2.55.
But… It was a bit different from what most of us know. Her belt was nothing but a chain. Why? Apparently, the guardians of the convent in which Coco grew up wore the same chain on their belts.
Her clasp was in the form of a rectangle (named the Mademoiselle Lock, referring to Chanel,
who never married), rather than the much-loved two crossed ‘C’s, which were only introduced in the 1980s by Karl Lagerfeld (art director Chanel fashion house since 1983).
What is constant in the production of handbags are the characteristic quilting. Most likely, there were several sources of inspiration for their use: jockeys’ riding jackets (Coco often went to races in her youth, she herself loved to ride horses, she also participated in hunting), stained glass in the windows of Aubazine Abbey (where she lived after her mother’s death), and sofa upholstery in her own Paris apartment. The burgundy lining is also traditional, which refers to the color of the habits worn in the monastery. Mademoiselle Chanel used to say that the inside of a bag should be as beautiful as the outside. replica handbags
Inside the front flap there is always a special zipped compartment. There is also an interesting story associated with its creation – in the same place, Chanel kept her love letters in her own handbag. There are also 3 other pockets inside – one for lipstick, without which Mademoiselle Chanel did not appear in public. On the outside of the back wall there is a pocket designed to store small change.
Handbags are available in 4 sizes: small,
medium/large (it is a mystery why the same size was given two quite different names) jumbo (meaning ‘colossus’) and maxi. In February 2005, wanting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of the handbag, Karl Lagerfeld presented a renewed edition of 2.55.
